The purpose of this workshop is two-fold;: (1) to assist school districts in the development of policies that address HIV/AIDS and Human Sexuality Education and, (2) to assist school personnel with the evidence-based research on effective sexuality education programs. Participants will be assisted in the development of policies that address attendance of students with HIV infection; procedures to protect HIV-infected students and staff from discrimination, and maintaining confidentiality of HIV-infected students and staff. In addition, participants will be trained to use the Health Education Curriculum Analysis Tool (HECAT) to evaluate sexuality education curricula. Finally, participants will be guided through activities that help to reduce controversy around sexuality education in order to help develop sound policies and teaching practices related to this topic.
At the end of this workshop participants will be able to:
- Draft policies on HIV/AIDS for their school districts;
- Identify four activities that help clarify and address concerns and objections to sexuality education instruction;
- List at least seven characteristics of effective sexuality education programs;
- Apply the constructs of the HECAT to analyze sexuality education curricula;
- Identify five characteristics of good policy development around sexuality education.
